How to fix a flat roof
Find where water enters, not just where it drips inside. Check outlets, edges and upstands before choosing a repair that matches the covering. Our flat roof repair guide explains the approach; avoid mixing incompatible patch materials.
When replacement makes sense
Repeated leaks, widespread splits or a soft deck can point towards flat roof replacement rather than another patch. Are flat roofs expensive to replace? Access, insulation and deck repairs affect the quote: see our flat roof replacement cost guide.
Compare GRP, EPDM, liquid roofing, torch-on felt and single-ply roofing for your roof.
For a roof with awkward corners, upstands or an existing covering that may be suitable for an overlay, see liquid roofing in Newcastle.
Flat Roofing FAQs
How do you fix a flat roof?+
Trace the real entry point first, then repair to match the existing system. Water can travel before it shows indoors, so a patch over the ceiling stain's position may miss the fault. We check the deck and outlets too.
What is the minimum fall for a flat roof?+
A flat roof is never truly flat. Falls are typically designed around 1:40 to achieve a finished fall of about 1:80, so water runs towards outlets. The required design depends on the system and deck; sagging can reduce the finished fall.
What is the cheapest flat roof system?+
Felt is usually cheapest up front but has the shortest life. GRP and EPDM cost more initially and generally last longer. Compare deck condition, roof details and the expected life rather than the covering price alone.
What are flat roofs made of?+
Common coverings are GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber, liquid-applied systems, torch-on felt and single-ply membranes. They sit over a supporting deck, with insulation included where required. Follow the system links below to compare their uses.
How long does a fibre glass (GRP) flat roof last?+
A correctly installed GRP roof typically lasts 25+ years. We only use trade-grade materials.
Can you install a flat roof in winter?+
Yes — GRP and liquid systems can be installed year-round provided conditions are dry. We plan installations around the weather to ensure proper curing.
Do you cover flat roof repairs as well as new installs?+
Yes. We handle leak repairs, patching, full replacements and re-coats on extensions, garages, dormers and commercial buildings.
Is liquid roofing better than GRP?+
Both are excellent. Liquid systems are ideal for complex shapes, refurbishments and roofs with lots of detail; GRP is best for new, accessible flat roofs.
