Concrete Tile Roofers — North East

Interlocking concrete tiles dominate the planned new-town belt — Washington, Cramlington, parts of Peterlee — and most post-war estate housing across the region. A lot of these roofs are now 40–55 years old and reaching the end of their original design life as a batch.

  • Interlocking concrete tile re-roofs
  • Strip-relay where tiles are still sound and the underlay has failed
  • Full re-cover with modern lightweight interlocking tile
  • Dry ridge, dry verge and dry valley systems
  • Insulation upgrade options at re-roof
  • Honest assessment — repair vs strip-relay vs full re-cover

Repair, strip-relay or full re-cover?

Most concrete tile roofs fail in a predictable sequence: ridge mortar cracks first, then verges loosen, then a few tiles slip, then the underlay finally tears. If we catch you mid-sequence, a properly priced strip-relay (using your existing tiles where they're still good) is usually a third of the cost of a full re-cover.

If the tiles themselves are showing surface erosion, frost-blown corners or major colour loss, a full re-cover with new lightweight tile is the right call — and the modern interlocking systems install faster and weigh less than the originals.

Concrete tile roofing FAQs

How long do concrete tiles last?+

50–60 years for the tiles themselves. Underlays and battens usually fail before the tiles do, which is why strip-relay is often more cost-effective than a full strip and re-cover.

Do new interlocking tiles weigh less than old ones?+

Yes — modern lightweight interlocking tiles are significantly lighter than 1960s–70s stock, which can also help roofs that have shown movement.

Can you re-roof an estate of similar properties?+

Yes — programmed estate re-roofs are common for us, particularly in the planned new-town belt around Washington and Cramlington.

Clay or concrete tiles: which is better for a North East roof?+

Neither is right for every roof. Start with the existing covering, roof pitch, structural support and the appearance of the building. Clay may suit a traditional roof where matching the original matters; concrete interlocking tiles may suit an existing concrete-tiled roof. Check any conservation or listed-building requirements before changing materials, and compare the full specification rather than the tile alone.

When does a concrete tile roof need replacing rather than repairing?+

A local fault on an otherwise sound roof may only need a repair. Widespread tile damage, repeated leaks or failed underlay and battens call for a broader assessment. If the tiles are still sound, strip-and-relay may renew the layers beneath without replacing every tile. A full re-cover is considered when the existing covering is no longer suitable for re-use.
