Buyer's guide
Slate vs Concrete Tile Roofing
Slate is thinner, lighter, longer-lived. Concrete tile is cheaper, heavier, available in many profiles. The right answer depends on the existing structure, the street's visual character, and the budget over 50 years not 5.
- Natural Welsh slate: 80–100 year life, lighter load
- Spanish slate: 50–80 year life, lower cost
- Concrete tile: 40–60 year life, lower up-front cost
- Clay tile: 60–80 year life, traditional look
- Existing rafter spec dictates options
How we'd specify on your project
Every comparison depends on the existing structure, the surrounding properties, and how long you'll hold the building. We'll tell you on the survey, in writing, which we'd specify and why.
