Pitched Slate & Tile Roofing Across the North East

The North East has more roof types in close proximity than almost any UK region — Welsh slate on Tynemouth villas, clay tile on Heaton terraces, concrete interlocking on Washington new-town housing, stone slate on Morpeth heritage stock. We re-roof and repair all of them. Whether you have a slate pitched roof or a tiled roof in the North East, the existing covering and the condition beneath it guide the choice between repair and re-roofing.

  • Natural and man-made slate re-roofs
  • Concrete and clay tile re-roofs sized to your existing pitch
  • Dry ridge systems — no more cracked mortar every five years
  • Stainless steel nails and proper underlay every time
  • Lead flashings, valleys and chimney detail all in-house
  • Heritage-sensitive work for conservation streets

Material choice matters across the region

Concrete interlocking tiles dominate the planned new-town belt — Washington, Cramlington, parts of Peterlee — and many are now 50+ years old, reaching the end of their original design life as a batch. Where the underlay has perished but the tiles are still good, a strip-and-relay with new battens and underlay is far cheaper than a full re-cover.

Older Tyneside and Wearside terraces are typically Welsh slate. Re-using salvageable slate keeps the streetscape consistent and is genuinely the right answer in conservation areas like Jesmond, Tynemouth and parts of central Sunderland.

Pitched roof replacement across the North East

Every re-roof starts with a survey. We look at the covering, the ridge, the verges, the leadwork and, from inside the loft, the underlay and timbers, then give you a written quote that says what is included. If a repair or a strip-and-relay will do the job, we tell you that instead of selling a full replacement.

On the day work starts, the scaffold goes up and the old covering is stripped back to the rafters. Sound slates or tiles can be set aside for re-use. Any rafters or battens that have rotted are dealt with before anything new goes on, because a new roof laid over tired timber does not last.

Next comes new breathable felt and treated battens, set out to suit the covering you are having. Our slate roofs are fixed with stainless steel nails. Concrete tile roofs suit the estate housing found across much of the region, and clay tile roofs suit older terraces where matched stock keeps the street looking consistent.

The roof is finished with a dry ridge system and the leadwork: flashings at chimneys and walls, and valleys where two slopes meet. Waste is cleared and the site left tidy. If you are working out a budget first, our guide to new roof cost explains what drives the price.

Choosing between slate and tile usually comes down to what the house already has, what the street looks like and the budget. We talk you through those options at the survey, show you what we found on the roof in photographs, and put the recommendation in writing so you can compare it with any other quote on a like-for-like basis. You decide, with no pressure to sign on the day.

Pitched roofing (North East) FAQs

How long does a new pitched roof last in the North East?+

Natural slate 80–100+ years; man-made slate and concrete tile 50+ years when correctly installed with quality underlay and stainless fixings.

Do you work on heritage and conservation streets?+

Yes — Welsh slate re-roofs, leadwork and traditional bedding for streets in Jesmond, Tynemouth, central Sunderland and Morpeth. We match existing where required.

Dry ridge or wet ridge?+

We default to dry ridge for new re-roofs in the North East — frost cycles inland and salt-laden wind on the coast both shorten the life of mortar-bedded ridges significantly.

How long does a pitched roof last in the North East climate?+

The covering is only part of the answer. Material quality, exposure to wind and frost, the condition of underlay and battens, ventilation and the detailing at ridges, valleys and flashings all affect how a roof lasts. Sound slates or tiles may remain usable even when the layers beneath them need renewing, so an inspection is more useful than judging the whole roof by age alone.

What does a pitched re-roof involve?+

We survey the roof and set out the work in a written quote. The old covering is stripped, sound tiles or slates are set aside where suitable for re-use, and damaged timber is dealt with before new breathable underlay and treated battens are fitted. The covering is then laid with suitable fixings, followed by the ridge and leadwork, with waste cleared at the end.
