Why the roofline fails before the roof does
The chain is almost always the same. A gutter blocks or a joint opens up; water spills over the back of the gutter instead of running to the downpipe; the fascia board behind it stays damp through winter; the rot works along the board and into the rafter feet it was protecting. By the time damp shows on a bedroom ceiling, the eaves have usually been wet for a couple of years. It's why we say blocked gutters are the number-one cause of fascia rot and eaves damp — a yearly clear-out costs a fraction of the repair it prevents.
Repair or replace — how we decide
We don't quote a full roofline replacement when a repair will do. A leaking joint gets resealed, a cracked short section gets swapped, and sound timber fascias that just look tired get cleaned and painted. Replacement is the right call when boards are soft, when soffits have sagged and lost their ventilation, or when the guttering is brittle and mismatched from years of patch repairs. Either way you get photos of what we found and a written quote that separates "needs doing now" from "keep an eye on it".

How do I know if my fascias need replacing or just painting?+
Push a screwdriver against the timber behind the paint. If it sinks in, the board is rotting and paint is hiding it, not fixing it. Sound timber that looks tired can be cleaned and painted; soft timber needs replacing.
How often should gutters be cleared?+
Once a year for most houses, twice a year if there are deciduous trees nearby — autumn and late spring. Blocked gutters are the single biggest cause of fascia rot we see.
Are gutter guards worth fitting?+
For most houses, no. They tend to trap moss above the mesh in a way that's harder to clear than an open gutter.
Can you repair a leaking gutter joint rather than replace the lot?+
Yes — a joint reseal or a short section swap is a normal repair for us. We'll only recommend full replacement when the run is genuinely at the end of its life, and we'll show you photos to back that up.
