Guttering Replacement Cost
Guttering replacement cost depends on the length being replaced, the joints and outlets required, the condition of the supporting boards and safe access. A gutter-only job is different from replacing the whole roofline. We inspect the run before giving a written, itemised quote, so a leaking joint does not automatically become a bill for new fascias and soffits.
Start with the fault, not a whole-house estimate
Water spilling over a gutter can come from a blocked outlet or downpipe, an incorrect fall, a loose bracket or a failed joint. Those problems need different work. If the gutter itself is sound, clearing the obstruction, resealing a joint or changing a short damaged length may be enough. Buying a complete new run will not be good value if the real problem is a downpipe that still cannot drain.
Replacement becomes more practical when several lengths have turned brittle or when fittings left by earlier repairs no longer match. The inspection should separate damaged guttering from sound sections and check what it fixes to. Soft fascia timber cannot provide a reliable support for new brackets; that is a separate repair to identify before the new run is installed.
What belongs on the guttering quote
Ask for the lengths and elevations included, the fittings being renewed and whether downpipes are part of the job. Corners, joints and outlets matter as well as the straight run. A price for the front gutter alone should not be compared with one that includes the rear elevation and replacement downpipes. The written description is as important as the total.
Access also needs a clear place in the quotation. Height, restricted space and obstacles below the eaves affect how the work can be reached. A small gutter job still needs suitable access, and the cheapest material price cannot tell you the installed cost. Where the fascias or eaves felt also need attention, ask for those items separately so you can see the reason for each part of the bill.
Guttering cost per metre and per foot
A per-metre figure is useful only when it describes the same work as the price you are comparing. Check whether it includes removal, fittings, downpipes and access rather than assuming those are included in the advertised rate. A simple straight run and a roofline with several corners are not interchangeable just because their total lengths match.
The existing combined fascia, soffit and gutter guide on this site gives £70 to £110 per metre fitted. That is a combined roofline figure, not a gutter-only tariff. It includes work on the boards as well as the gutter, so using it as a gutter cost estimator would price the wrong job. For gutters alone, the measured scope and itemised quotation are the useful comparison.
Replacing gutters alongside fascia work
Gutters have to be taken down when the fascia behind them is replaced. If both genuinely need renewal, arranging them together can avoid repeating access and removal work. That does not mean every gutter replacement needs new boards. Firm, dry timber can remain, while rotten boards and damaged rafter ends need attention on their own merits.
Keep the new run draining properly
New guttering needs proper falls and secure brackets, with downpipes that can carry the water away. Continuing to overflow after replacement is a reason to revisit the outlet and drainage route, not to accept staining on a newly fitted fascia. A clear-out and joint check are also useful when the run is being assessed for replacement.
Our existing guidance is to clear gutters once a year on most houses, and twice a year where deciduous trees are nearby. Cleaning cost is a different quotation from replacement cost: ask for the work you actually need. Guttering Replacement Cost FAQs
How much should new gutters cost to install?+
The measured length, fittings, downpipes and access decide the installed price. We inspect those items and give a written quote rather than applying a whole-house figure to an unseen run.
Is guttering priced per metre in the UK?+
A quotation can show the length in metres, but the scope still needs to name joints, outlets, access and any downpipe work. Compare the complete installed job, not the length alone.
Does a leaking joint mean all the gutters need replacing?+
No. A sound run with one failed joint can be resealed or repaired locally. Widespread brittleness or incompatible fittings may make replacement more sensible.
Is gutter cleaning included in replacement cost?+
Ask which gutters and downpipes are being cleared or renewed. Clearing an existing blockage and installing replacement guttering are different tasks and should be clear in the quote.
