Porch roof replacement
Porch roof replacement makes sense when the small flat top is worn out or the deck beneath it is damaged. If the top is sound and only the wall flashing has failed, a repair may be enough. We check both before recommending work, because water over the front door often comes from a lifted lead apron rather than the whole roof.
Why water appears over the front door
A porch leak often shows at the door head because water runs down behind the roof-to-wall junction. Wind-driven rain can get behind a lifted lead apron even when ordinary rainfall causes no visible problem. Porous, ageing felt on the small flat top is another common route in. The stain indoors does not always sit directly under the entry point.
Before deciding on porch roof repair or replacement, we look at the covering, flashing, brickwork and front edge. Photographs of when the leak happens can help explain the pattern. Do not climb onto a wet porch roof to investigate: its deck may be weakened, and the short height does not remove the risk of a fall.
Repair the apron or replace the top?
Repair is sensible when the roof surface and deck are sound and the fault is confined to the flashing. Reworking that junction avoids replacing a serviceable top. If the covering is broadly deteriorated, the deck feels soft or several details have failed, patching one corner may leave other routes for water untouched.
A proper replacement renews the top in GRP or liquid and re-details the apron into the brickwork. The specification follows the actual condition rather than treating every porch as the same small job. Our flat roof repair page explains the same repair-or-replace distinction on larger roofs.
Lead flashing, pointing and the drip edge
Where the apron needs renewal, code 4 or code 5 lead is selected to suit the detail. The flashing is fitted into the brickwork rather than relying on a bead of sealant across the face. Pointing is made good above the flashing chase so rain cannot bypass the new apron through an open or defective joint.
At the front, a drip edge over the door head directs water away instead of letting it track back underneath. Edges and corners need to work with the roof covering, not just look tidy from the pavement. See our lead flashing replacement guide for more about the wall junction and its purpose.
Can a porch roof be flat?
Most porch roofs are flat or very low-pitch. Flat should still mean a roof with falls that move water towards its drainage edge or outlet. GRP and liquid systems suit the small top, including the close detailing around the wall and front edge. Ponding should be investigated rather than accepted as something a new covering automatically fixes.
We check the deck before closing it in and discuss any timber repairs that are needed. You can compare materials on our flat roofing page. If the projection is a bay rather than an entrance porch, our bay window roof repair guide covers that related junction.
Porch roof cost and planning the work
There is no single porch roof cost that sensibly covers flashing-only repairs, a new top and replacement of a damaged deck. It is usually a small, fixed-price job, quoted in writing after a look. The quote should make clear which parts are being renewed and whether any timber work is included, so you can compare the same scope.
A straightforward porch job is a half-day job in most cases, but damaged timber, access and suitable weather can change the programme. That is a guide to the work itself, not a response-time promise. We agree the scope and timing before starting, including keeping the front entrance usable where practical. Ask for a free quote and describe whether the leak follows all rain or only driving rain.

Porch roof replacement FAQs
Why does my porch leak only in driving rain?+
Wind-driven water can get behind a lifted lead apron at the wall. We check that junction and the nearby brickwork as well as the top, rather than assuming the entire roof needs replacing.
Can a porch roof be flat?+
Yes, most are flat or low-pitch. GRP or liquid suits the small flat top, but the roof still needs falls and a properly detailed drainage edge.
How much does a porch roof cost?+
It is generally a small job with a written fixed price after inspection. The cost depends on whether you need flashing repairs, a replacement top or deck work; we do not price it blind.
Can you repair just the flashing?+
Yes, when the roof top and deck are sound and only the apron has failed. We explain when a flashing repair is enough rather than recommending unnecessary replacement.
