Green roof installation
A green roof is a waterproof roof with a planted layer above it. For garages, sheds and extensions, an extensive sedum roof is the practical starting point: a relatively lightweight, low-maintenance system rather than a roof garden. The structure must carry the full wet weight, so that check comes before a quote or a choice of plants.
Extensive sedum, not a roof garden
Extensive systems use a shallow growing medium and hardy sedum plants. They are lighter than intensive green roofs, which have deeper soil, larger plants and sometimes usable garden space. Lightweight is a comparison, not permission to put one on any timber roof. Even a shallow planted build-up adds real weight, especially after rain.
We assess the roof and specify an extensive sedum build-up to suit the structure and waterproofing. An intensive garden roof is a different structural and design brief. If you want regular access, seating or substantial planting, raise that at the outset rather than treating sedum as the first stage of a roof terrace.
Can it go on a garage, shed or house?
Flat and low-pitch roofs can suit sedum, including a garage, single-storey extension or suitable shed. A flat roof still needs falls and clear outlets. Steeper roofs need specialist retention systems to prevent the planted layers moving; the slope must be checked against the proposed system's limits.
The deck, joists, supports and overall condition need assessment before quoting. Some roofs need strengthening; some are unsuitable without substantial changes. A small shed is not automatically suitable just because its roof area is small. We can arrange a free roof survey to discuss the roof and identify whether further structural input is needed.
What goes beneath the sedum
The waterproofing comes first, usually an EPDM or liquid membrane selected as part of a compatible system. Above that sit root protection, drainage, growing medium and sedum. The root barrier protects the waterproof layer, while the drainage layer lets excess rainwater reach the outlets rather than saturating the build-up indefinitely.
Edges, wall junctions and outlets need careful detailing and access for inspection. Covering an old leaking membrane with plants only makes the fault harder to reach. Read about EPDM waterproofing and garage roof replacement if the underlying roof also needs renewal.
Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance
Plan a couple of checks a year, with safe access agreed before installation. Remove unwanted seedlings, check vegetation coverage and keep outlets and inspection margins clear. Follow the system supplier's advice on feeding and watering, particularly while plants establish or during prolonged dry weather. Do not walk across the planting as though it were paving.
Sedum can support biodiversity and shield the membrane from sunlight. It may help moderate roof temperatures, but it does not replace the insulation needed for a heated room. Those benefits need weighing against structural work, ongoing care and more involved access to the waterproofing if repairs become necessary.
How green roof cost is worked out
There is no useful fixed green roof price without checking the structure and measuring the roof. Strengthening, membrane condition, access, edge details and the chosen planted system all affect the work. Green roof installation is quoted after the survey and structural check, with the proposed layers explained.

Green roof installation FAQs
Can I put a green roof on my garage?+
Yes, if the structure can carry the complete system when wet. The deck and supports are checked first; strengthening may be needed before sedum can be considered.
Can green roofs be sloped?+
Extensive systems work on suitable low pitches. Steeper roofs need retention systems and specialist design, so the proposed pitch must be checked before choosing the build-up.
Are green roofs worth it?+
They can support biodiversity, help moderate temperatures and protect the membrane from UV, potentially helping the waterproofing last longer. They add weight, cost and maintenance, and are not a substitute for proper insulation.
How much does a green roof cost?+
It depends on size, structure, access and the waterproofing required. We offer a free survey; the quote follows the structural check rather than a guess from roof area alone.
