Fibreglass Roof Repair
Yes, a fibreglass (GRP) roof can be repaired. Cracks, impact damage, failed trims and a worn topcoat can usually be put right by grinding the damaged area back, laying new resin and glass matting over it with a proper overlap, and finishing with a fresh topcoat. It works well on a roof where the deck underneath is still sound. If water has been getting in long enough to soften the boards, the deck has to be dealt with first, and we will tell you if replacement makes more sense.

What goes wrong with GRP roofs
Cracks at trims and joints. Most GRP faults appear where the laminate meets a trim or where two deck boards join. Movement in the deck cracks the laminate above it.
Impact damage. A dropped tool, a ladder or a fallen branch can crack the surface. GRP is hard-wearing, but not unbreakable.
Topcoat wear. The coloured topcoat protects the laminate from sunlight. On quality systems it may need a refresh at 15 to 20 years to keep colour and UV protection, which is maintenance rather than failure.
Poor original work. Laminate laid too thin, in damp conditions, or without the right matting at corners will crack early. That is a workmanship issue, not a problem with GRP itself.
How a fibreglass roof repair is done
The damaged area is cut or ground back to sound laminate and cleaned. New resin and chopped strand mat are laid in, extending well beyond the damage so the repair bonds into the existing roof. Corners and trims get extra reinforcement. Once cured, a new topcoat goes on, matched as closely as possible. Repairs need dry conditions, so if the roof is leaking now we make it safe first and book the repair behind that.
Repair or replace?
A repair is right when the damage is local and the rest of the laminate is well bonded. If cracks are spread across the roof, the deck is soft, or earlier repairs keep failing, replacement in GRP or another system is the better answer. See GRP fibreglass roofing for new roofs and flat roof leaking if you are still tracing the cause.
Fibreglass kits for DIY roof repair are widely sold, but getting resin to bond to an old, weathered laminate is harder than it looks, and a poor patch can trap water. Call 07840 996627, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm. For active leaks we aim to attend the same or next working day, weather permitting, and make the roof safe first.
Fibreglass Roof Repair FAQs
Can GRP roofs be repaired?+
Yes. Cracks, impact damage and failed trims can be ground back and re-laminated, provided the deck underneath is sound.
Can a fibreglass roof be repaired without replacing it?+
Usually, if the damage is local. We check the deck first and recommend replacement only when the roof has failed widely or the timber is wet.
Will the repair match the rest of the roof?+
We match the topcoat colour as closely as possible. On older roofs a full topcoat refresh can give the whole roof an even finish.
How long does a GRP repair take?+
Most local repairs are a short job once the roof is dry, as the resin needs dry weather to cure properly.
