Buyer's guide
Natural Slate vs Synthetic Slate
Synthetic slates (composite, fibre cement) look credible at street level and cost 30–50% less than natural Welsh slate. They last 30–50 years vs 80+ for natural. For long-term owner-occupiers, natural is usually better value over the roof's life.
- Natural: 80–100 year life
- Synthetic: 30–50 year life
- Synthetic 30–50% cheaper up front
- Natural holds resale value better
- Either valid — depends on holding period
How we'd specify on your project
Every comparison depends on the existing structure, the surrounding properties, and how long you'll hold the building. We'll tell you on the survey, in writing, which we'd specify and why.
