Why pointing fails — and why it matters
Mortar on a roof lives a hard life: frost, driving rain, and constant movement between the covering and the brickwork. Cracked ridge bedding and eroded verge pointing are more than untidy — they let water into the underlay, and from there into the ceiling below. The most common reason pointing fails early is the mix: mortar that is too strong or too rich for the building cracks out within ten years, and on older brickwork it can damage the brick it was meant to protect. Repoint, or convert to dry ridge?
A traditional mortar-bedded ridge needs attention every few years — that is simply the nature of mortar on an exposed ridge line. A dry ridge system replaces the mortar with mechanical clamps and a vented roll, so there is nothing to crack out and the ridge gets ventilation as a bonus. Conversion costs more on the day; repointing costs less but will want doing again. There is no single right answer for every roof, so we price both options on the same quote and let you choose on lifetime cost rather than guesswork.

Do I need scaffolding for repointing?+
Usually yes for anything beyond a quick inspection — a scaffold or tower is included in the price we quote, not added afterwards as an extra.
Should I repoint the ridge or convert to dry ridge?+
It depends on the roof. A dry ridge conversion uses mechanical clamps instead of mortar, so there is nothing to crack out in five years' time — but a sound traditional re-bed in the right mortar is still a perfectly good repair on many roofs. We quote both so you can choose on lifetime cost.
