Buyer's guide
Dry Ridge vs Mortar Bedded Ridge
Mortar ridges crack in five to ten years and let weather under the ridge tile. Dry ridge systems — mechanical fixing with weatherproof ventilation strip — are now industry-standard on new re-roofs. We use dry ridge by default and only revert to mortar on heritage projects.
- Dry ridge: 30+ year life, BS 5534 compliant
- Mortar: 5–10 years before re-bedding needed
- Dry ridge adds proper ridge ventilation
- Mortar still right on listed-building work
- Cost difference small over a full re-roof
How we'd specify on your project
Every comparison depends on the existing structure, the surrounding properties, and how long you'll hold the building. We'll tell you on the survey, in writing, which we'd specify and why.
