The historic core is stone built and tightly packed, with steep pitched roofs and complicated junctions. Around it sit Victorian terraces in Gilesgate, Crossgate and Neville's Cross, much of it now student let, then post war and modern estates spreading towards Framwellgate Moor, Belmont and Newton Hall.
