Roof Valley Repairs in North Shields

Valleys are where two roof pitches meet — and where every failure eventually shows. In North Shields we replace valleys most weeks: cracked lead on old cottages, split GRP on 1990s dormers, and open-mortar valleys that were never right from day one. The fix is a proper Code 5 lead or a modern dry-valley trough. We're regularly on roofs close to the A19 (Tyne Tunnel approach), out around Royal Quays, through Preston and Chirton.

  • Code 5 lead as standard for domestic valleys
  • Dry-valley GRP or plastic trough where the client prefers a modern detail
  • Tile-and-a-half cut and clipped at the valley edge (not just mortar-bedded)
  • Underlay taken through the valley continuously — no cut-and-lap under a lead flow
  • Stainless valley clips on exposed pitches
  • Old lead recycled and credited off the invoice where worth doing

Lead vs dry valley

Lead: proper for older homes, 50-year life, right for heritage streets. Dry valley: quicker fit, cheaper materials, modern look, 25–30 year life. Both are valid. We spec by property age and client preference — not by what's easier for us. Riverside terraces near the Fish Quay, 1930s semis through Preston, and modern townhouses around Royal Quays. Bay-window valleys, dormer valleys and hip-to-gable valleys all need different details — we don't use a one-size-fits-all approach.

Never mortar over a valley

It's the most common bodge we're called to. Mortar bedding into the valley run itself blocks flow, cracks in a year and pushes water sideways under the tiles. If you've been sold that as a 'repair', we can put it right properly.

Roof valley repair in North Shields — FAQs

Can you patch a valley or does it need full replacement?+

Small localised cracks in Code 5 lead can be patched with lead-burn or a lead-flash patch. Anything longer than about 300mm we recommend full replacement — patching a whole run is more work than replacing.

How long does a valley replacement take?+

Single valley (bay or dormer): half a day plus scaffold day. Full valley on a large hipped roof: 1–2 days. Scaffold usually 1–3 days depending on access.

Will the tiles either side get damaged?+

Any that break during removal get replaced from stock — we always allow reclaimed tiles to match age. Included in the quote.

Do you cover North Shields and surrounding areas?+

Yes — NE29 – NE30, plus Wallsend, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay.
