Local Roofer in Chester-le-Street

Most Chester-le-Street homeowners we work with found us by word of mouth — a neighbour's re-roof, a quayside flat roof, a chimney rebuild that didn't leak again. Chester-le-Street's older stone properties usually have natural slate. The single most useful thing we can do on those roofs is keep valleys and parapet gutters genuinely clear — most 'leaks' here turn out to be overflow events. We're regularly on roofs close to the A1(M), through Pelton and Sacriston-edge.

Why Chester-le-Street specifically

Stone-faced terraces around the historic centre, plus newer estate housing through Great Lumley and Pelton. Wetter than the coastal towns — guttering and valley clearance is a much bigger source of leaks here than wind damage.

How we quote

We attend in person, get on the roof, and itemise the quote in writing. No high-pressure sales, no '£200 today only' tricks, no surveyor fee.

Housing stock in Chester-le-Street

The historic centre around Front Street holds the oldest fabric, with Victorian terraces around it. Beyond that, interwar semis, extensive post war estates through Pelton, Newfield and Chester Moor, and pockets of bungalow development that give the town a higher than average share of large single storey roofs.

Roof types we see most in Chester-le-Street

Welsh slate on the older property near the centre, clay and concrete tile on the interwar and post war stock, and a lot of fully hipped bungalow roofs where hip and ridge detailing matters more than the tile itself. Older stone property brings lime mortar and parapet detail with it.

Weather and exposure here

Inland and slightly elevated, so hard frosts and the freeze and thaw cycle do most of the damage. Mortar bedded hips and ridges suffer, chimney flaunching cracks, and the Wear valley gives some sheltered streets a persistent moss problem on north facing slopes.

Streets, access and getting to you

Front Street and the older centre need care and occasionally a licence, but most of the town is estate housing with room for scaffold and a vehicle. Sitting on the A1(M) with the A167 running through, it is one of the quickest parts of the patch for us to reach.

About us

Are you actually local?+

Yes — Sunderland-based, on-site across Chester-le-Street most weeks. Not a national franchise.

Do you charge for quotes?+

No. Survey and written quote are free with no obligation.

Can you do everything in-house?+

Yes — flat, pitched, repair, lead, scaffold liaison, commercial. We don't subcontract the trade.

Why do bungalow roofs need so much ventilation work?+

Large shallow lofts with insulation pushed tight into the eaves have nowhere for air to move, so moisture from the house condenses on the underside of the felt. It looks exactly like a leak and it is fixed with eaves and ridge ventilation, not a new roof.

Should older stone property be pointed in lime?+

Where the original mortar is lime and the stone is soft, yes. Hard cement traps moisture in the face of the stone and the frost then spalls it, which is a much more expensive problem than a pointing job.

How quickly can you get to a leak in Chester-le-Street?+

We aim to attend leaks and make safes the same or next working day, Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm. We stop the water first, then quote the permanent repair once we have photographed what caused it. Call 07840 996627.

Is the survey really free in Chester-le-Street?+

Yes, for homeowners, landlords and businesses across DH2, DH3. We get to roof level, photograph the condition and email a written quote. If your roof does not need work yet, we will say so in writing.
