Wallsend Lead Work & Flashing Repairs

Lead is only as reliable as its detail. In Wallsend we see the same three faults on every survey: mortar-only "fillets" instead of proper stepped flashing, undersized cover flashings that don't overlap the upstand by enough, and unlapped joints on long runs. Fix those and the roof stays dry. We're regularly on roofs close to the A19, out around Wallsend Business Park, through Battle Hill and High Farm.

  • Code 4 or Code 5 lead as the location demands — no thin turn-up stuff
  • Chased into a fresh mortar joint, not silicone-glued to the render
  • Stepped, soaker and back-gutter details all dressed by hand
  • Sand:cement pointing finish, not mastic
  • Old lead recycled and credited off the invoice where the weight justifies it
  • Patination oil applied to prevent white-carbonate staining on new lead

Where flashing fails on Wallsend roofs

Chimney back-gutters (short lap, no cricket, mortar-only fillet), abutment flashings on extensions (undersized cover, no upstand behind the render), dormer cheeks (mitred corners cracked), and valley/step flashings on tiled roofs. We check every one on the survey. Edwardian terraces close to the Roman Wall corridor and large social-housing estates through Battle Hill.

Code 4 vs Code 5 vs Code 6

Code 4 (blue) for standard cover flashings, soakers and short back-gutters. Code 5 (red) for longer runs, exposed elevations and anything a person can walk on. Code 6 (black) for parapets and valleys with heavy flow. We spec by location, not by rule of thumb.

Lead flashing replacement in Wallsend — FAQs

Can you just point the mortar rather than re-lead?+

Only if the lead itself is sound and it's only the joint that's failed. Nine times out of ten the lead has hardened and cracked too — a fresh point over cracked lead lasts one winter.

How long does new lead flashing last?+

30–50 years for Code 4 in a normal exposure. Longer with patination oil applied at install to stop the initial white staining that runs onto tiles below.

Do you cover the chimney pot and cowl too?+

Yes — if the pot needs re-flaunching or a cowl fitting, we price that separately in the quote so you can choose to include it or not.

Which Wallsend postcodes do you cover?+

NE28 — plus Newcastle, North Shields, Killingworth.
