New uPVC Gutters — Ashington

Every "damp on the outside wall" job in Ashington starts with the gutters. If they overflow, the wall is wet, and no amount of internal decoration fixes it. New gutters, sized right and set at the right fall, is the actual fix. We're regularly on roofs close to the A189, through Hirst and Newbiggin-edge.

  • Brackets set at 800mm centres, not the 1200mm many chancers use
  • Correct fall to outlet (1:600 minimum) — no ponding, no overflow
  • Hoppers to receive downpipes from bays and dormers, not just T-junctions
  • 112mm half-round or square-line as standard; 150mm on commercial
  • All new fascia-to-gutter joints sealed with EPDM, not silicone
  • Downpipes clipped every 1.8m — no wobbling in a gale

Common Ashington gutter failures

Sag from too-few brackets (the biggest one), joints splitting from UV embrittlement, downpipes cracked at the shoe from freeze, and rear-of-property downpipes disconnected into a soakaway that's collapsed. We check all four on the survey. Long colliery-era terraces in Hirst, plus 1960s social housing and newer estates around the outskirts. We match half-round on older houses and square-line on newer estates — mixing profiles across neighbours looks wrong; we work with the street's existing look.

Cast-iron vs uPVC vs aluminium

Original cast-iron is repairable if worth saving. uPVC cast-effect gives the look for a fifth of the price and zero maintenance. Aluminium seamless is a step up in longevity and price — worth it on large properties with long runs where every joint is a potential leak.

Standard semi: one day. Detached with hips and bay: a day and a half. Terrace with rear alley access: one day; front-only if scaffold is needed can be two.

Will you replace the downpipes too?+

Yes, we quote them together — replacing gutter and leaving 30-year-old brittle downpipes is false economy.
