Chimney Take-Down & Reroof, South Shields

Removing a chimney is a structural job — the breast below usually still carries some load, so a gallows bracket or steel goes in. We coordinate with building control and provide the structural sign-off so the paperwork is right if you ever sell. We're regularly on roofs close to the A194(M), out around Tyne Dock, through Westoe and Whiteleas.

  • Full scaffold to the ridge; safe brick-by-brick take-down
  • Rubble bagged and lowered — no bricks thrown down or dropped in the garden
  • Gallows bracket or structural steel to support retained breast below
  • Matched tile or slate infill — reclaimed where the roof is old
  • New underlay and battens local to the infill
  • Building-regs notice and structural sign-off included

South Shields shared stacks

On a South Shields mid-terrace the stack often serves both houses. Removing only your half is possible but harder — you rebuild a party wall detail at ridge height and the neighbour's flue gets capped. Whole-stack removal with the neighbour is simpler and cheaper split two ways. Solid Westoe terraces, large interwar semis around Harton, and exposed coastal properties towards Marsden. Victorian and Edwardian South Shields terraces often have shared stacks between properties — that's a different job and needs the neighbour's agreement.

Full removal vs stub

Full removal takes the stack to below roof line and infills. Stub removal leaves it just below the ridge with a cap — cheaper but you still see it. Full removal is our default because it never needs revisiting.

Chimney removal in South Shields — FAQs

Do I need planning permission?+

Not usually — chimney removal below the roof line is normally permitted development. In a conservation area or on a listed building it does need consent. We check on the survey.

How long does it take?+

Scaffold day one. Take-down day two. Structural infill and tile match day three. Scaffold down within the week.

Will the tile infill match the rest of the roof?+

On a modern concrete-tile roof, yes — same tile ordered new. On an old clay or slate roof we source reclaimed to match age and colour — that's part of the quote.

Do you cover all of South Shields?+

Yes — NE33 – NE34 and surrounding villages including Jarrow and Hebburn.
