Morpeth Chimney Stack Removal & Roof Make-Good

Taking a chimney down in Morpeth sounds dramatic but on most terraces it's a two-to-three day job. Scaffold up, brick-by-brick down to below the tile line, gallows bracket if the breast stays internally, and matched tile infill so from the street you can't tell it was ever there. We're regularly on roofs close to the A1, through Stobhill and Loansdean.

  • Full scaffold to the ridge; safe brick-by-brick take-down
  • Rubble bagged and lowered — no bricks thrown down or dropped in the garden
  • Gallows bracket or structural steel to support retained breast below
  • Matched tile or slate infill — reclaimed where the roof is old
  • New underlay and battens local to the infill
  • Building-regs notice and structural sign-off included

What happens internally

The breast below usually stays — knocking it out fully is a bigger structural job (RSJ into party wall). Most clients leave the breast, plaster over the old opening and gain a chimney-breast-shaped alcove. Morpeth building control officers are used to seeing gallows brackets — we install to their standard detail so the sign-off is clean.

Morpeth shared stacks

On a Morpeth mid-terrace the stack often serves both houses. Removing only your half is possible but harder — you rebuild a party wall detail at ridge height and the neighbour's flue gets capped. Whole-stack removal with the neighbour is simpler and cheaper split two ways.

Chimney removal in Morpeth — FAQs

Do I need planning permission?+

Not usually — chimney removal below the roof line is normally permitted development. In a conservation area or on a listed building it does need consent. We check on the survey.

How long does it take?+

Scaffold day one. Take-down day two. Structural infill and tile match day three. Scaffold down within the week.

Will the tile infill match the rest of the roof?+

On a modern concrete-tile roof, yes — same tile ordered new. On an old clay or slate roof we source reclaimed to match age and colour — that's part of the quote.

Do you cover all of Morpeth?+

Yes — NE61 and surrounding villages including Ashington and Bedlington.
